The Agent

I live in a really cool high rise condominium that has many sports figures as neighbors. Since I will talk to anyone, I happen to meet some of them and develop friendships.

One of these sports figures planned to have a summer party and invited me to attend. I was super excited because the guest list was IMPRESSIVE!

I arrive at the party and work the room like its my job. Shocker, I know. I end up meeting this sports agent who represents my neighbor and we start to have a conversation.

We live in the same part of town, go to the same church, have an office in the same building so we seem to have many things in common. However, he was a bit of a bragger which I wasn't really impressed with, but chalked it up to him being somewhat socially awkward.

I continue to talk to other people and have a great time. The agent comes over to me and says he needs to go downstairs to let his niece up (we have a very secure building). I asked if he needed my help and he said he was all set and would be right back.

He comes back with his niece and introduces me to her. I start talking to her and we happen to bond over David Yurman jewelry and being single. She tells me she has never dated on-line before and I start sharing some of my stories.

His niece and I get along famously and now it is time to sit down as we were going to play a game. She leans over to me and says, forget online dating, sit next to my Uncle, I see the two of you being an item.

I said, really? She said yes, I want you both to date. She continued to say, he is kind of dating someone right now but I don't care for her. The niece viewed this as just a slight challenge to overcome but it will be no problem in the long run (famous last words).

I sit down next to the agent and he has since had quite a few drinks. He leans over to me and asks if I can feel it. I said, feel what? He said, the chemistry between us. I said, yes, I guess so? He said it is electric.

We then chatted some more about vacations, etc. He leaned over and said, we should kiss. Since we were sitting at a table with his niece, his client, etc. I said, nope, not my style.

We talked about restaurants and he said he wanted to take me to the newest place in our neighborhood since we live so close to each other.

Now, all of the wives who are there and know him keep coming up to me saying the agent is really interested in me. I said, well, I am single. if he is too (big if), we should go out.

Fast forward to the end of the night and he wants me to go to his client's place for a night cap (my neighbor). We all get on one elevator and I panic. I thought, I don't want him to make a move in front of everyone down there. So, I hit my floor first. I jump off the elevator and say it was nice to meet everyone. He said, you are leaving? I said - yup. Poof, I am gone. I was mostly wanting to save him from anything tricky at the end of the night due to drinks being involved.

I tell this story to my friends and they said, he thinks you have no interest in him because you jumped out of the elevator. I said, not true, I did kind of like him, I just didn't want it to get awkward at the end of the night. And, also it seems he is dating someone. They said, he would never know that you had any interest. You need to get his number and send him a text.

So, I reach out to my neighbor and ask for his number. I thought perhaps he would ask why but no, he just sent his entire contact information to me. Leave it to a guy to not over analyze it!

I send him a note saying it was great to meet him and would love to go to that restaurant we talked about. He said he was busy but would get in touch with me very soon.

Never heard from him again....Oh, but I did see him at a future party and he introduced me to his girlfriend. Awkward!

Lesson learned? You can have instant chemistry, but sometimes it goes no further than that. I bet he woke up the next day and finally remembered he had a girlfriend!
